The Sayings of the Wise – Proverbs 22:17-24:34

“Incline your ear, and hear the words of the wise. . “ (Proverbs 22:17a)

Our study of Proverbs now takes a bit of a turn as Solomon relates to his children the “words of the wise.” This section consists of thirty sayings (v20) and stretches from chapter 22 verse 22 to chapter 24 verse 22. Then, chapter 24 ends with more sayings of the wise. Our exposition will cover the middle of chapter 22 through the end of chapter 24.

The “wise” that are referred to are unknown, but regardless of where Solomon may have gathered these sayings, we can be sure that they are as beneficial as the rest of the Word of God. While some have pointed out that these wise sayings parallel other ancient texts, the difference lies in their foundation: “That your trust may be in the LORD.” (Proverbs 22:19)

Since we are covering such a lengthy portion of scripture, it is important that we read the text prior to the exposition on Sunday. Please take time over the next week to read through 22:17-24:34. As you do, note how many of the “sayings of the wise” are similar to what Solomon has been teaching all along. Ask yourself how you can apply these pieces of practical wisdom to your own life. And consider how counter-cultural these things are in contrast to the “wisdom” of modern society.

Here’s a helpful way to divide your reading:
